Ten

“Oh dear, we are very, very sorry for coming down here without permission,” Grith murmured, her voice a bellow as it echoed through the library. She dipped her head down, looking up at the librarian with pleading eyes. “It was just that it was extremely easy for us to solve your lock and come down here and we figured that you wouldn’t mind. We can leave at once, as the scent ended down here!”

The dragon let out a yelp as a glowing blue fireball sailed just above her head, hitting the wall behind her. “Sorry again!” she yelled out as she turned and ran, following behind Chris and Ashley, who’d already gotten a head-start on her. Heart racing, her tail whipped around the corner of a bookshelf, ducking behind it as another fireball blasted out from the hallway, almost singing her tail feathers.

“And she was worried about Grith setting fire to things?” Ashley yelled, sprinting down the hallway as the dragon overtook her in a few leaps. “Chris, tell her to stop!”

Chris shook his head with a gulp. “Ohh, we shouldn’t have gone in here, we shouldn’t have gone in here!”

Grith turned her head back as footsteps pounded through the ground, and she spotted the librarian sprinting after her. Another fireball whooshed over her head, and Grith let out a shriek of agony as it hit one of the bookshelves, the tomes engulfed in blue flames.

“Not the books!” the dragon squealed, trying to flap one of her wings as she passed them and put the flames out. She let out another yelp as a sharp pain tore into her wing, ripping away feathers. Her eyes went wide as she saw that the books engulfed in flames had grown sharp teeth, flinging themselves at Grith.

“That is a relief,” Grith puffed, shaking her wing and snarling at one of the books as another blue flame shot over her and more books came to life, snapping as they bobbed up and down in the air after the dragon. She spread her wings wide open, knocking away a few books as her eyes glowed, golden ribbons of light swirling around her feathers, and she drew runes with the claws on their tips to dispel the magic around the books before they could get more injured.

“Wait, stop!” Chris yelled, waving his hands up at Grith to get her attention. “No spells! The glamor will shatter, and I can’t cast it again with the magic I have left! I really don’t want to collapse here and get eaten by books!”

Grith snorted and pulled her wings back in, the magic glow fading. She whacked one of the books with her tail as it tried to bite it, and hit another with a wing-spur, ripping it through the pages. “Sorry!” she apologized to the book as it limply tried to bite her again. “I did not mean to hurt you!”

Ashley shook her head as the three turned another corner, sprinting as she struggled to keep up with the dragon.
